Social Report 2006/2007GRIINTRODUCTION TO G3 INDICATORS This section covers our 2006 performance against the Global Reporting Initiative's (GRI) new G3 key performance indicators. The GRI reporting covers British American Tobacco operating companies in the EU 25 (Bulgaria and Romania only joined in 2007). British American Tobacco operates in all European Union member states. Our factories are located in Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, UK, Poland and Hungary. Cyprus and Malta closed down in 2006. It is worth noting that British American Tobacco operating in Austria, for EHS data, will start reporting as of 2007 and that our companies in Denmark, Estonia, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Sweden have in most instances not reported any data due to minor or non existent British American Tobacco activity in that market. The GRI's vision is that reporting on economic, environmental, and social performance by all organisations is as routine and comparable as financial reporting. The GRI aims to accomplish this by developing, improving and building capacity around a Sustainability Reporting Framework. At the core of the framework are the Sustainability Reporting Guidelines, the latest version of which are known as the G3 Guidelines. The new G3 Guidelines allow more flexibility to reporting organisations in which indicators they report against, by allowing for a materiality test to be carried out. They also provide greater comparability for users by focusing on hard data instead of requiring descriptions of activity. For this Report, we have chosen to report only against the G3 performance indicators and not the other principles and disclosures that make up the G3 Guidelines, although we will consider these as part of our future reporting. Globally, we intend to carry out a materiality test on the indicators during 2007 to establish a core set that we will report against in the future. This should ensure that we report only on those key issues where measurement and improvement can add value for us and our stakeholders. The new G3 Guidelines were launched in October 2006 and the shift towards more quantitative responses means that we are not able to report fully against all of the indicators at this stage. Where this is the case, we have clearly stated that we cannot report on all of the information required and, where appropriate, we offer a description of our activities in this area instead. In some instances we do not have the data for the European Union's 25 member states, where this is the case we provide information regarding global activities. You can find more global information on our activities throughout 2006, including much of the information previously found in our Group social reports, online at www.bat.com.
